JPEG Imager Version History

Version 2.5.2.456 (November 24, 2011)
  • The look of GUI elements was updated to adopt, where possible, the visual styles of the Windows version on which the program is running.
  • Unicode support for file names and Text Overlay tool.
  • Fixed minor graphical artifacts that could sometimes appear when you move or resize the selection frame for the Crop tool.
Version 2.5.1.407 (September 26, 2011)
  • Added experimental support for JPEG XR (HD Photo) compression standard.
  • Added an option to split the main window horizontally, which may make the comparison for landscape-oriented and panoramic images more convenient.
  • Added an option to auto-hide the compression controls when not needed, i.e. when in editing mode.
  • Fixed not remembering the last used compression format when you restart the program.
  • The ability to overlay text can now be used in batch mode.
  • Batch Wizard: added Padding option for thumbnail images. Borders and padding are now taken into account when resizing thumbnails so that a thumbnail does not exceed the max width and height that you specified.
  • Fixed a bug that caused not loading some image file formats in batch mode.
  • Also, please note that starting with this update, the program is no longer compatible with versions of Windows prior to Windows 2000 (e.g. Windows 95, 98, ME, and NT).
Version 2.5.0.304 (October 7, 2010)
  • A brand new Crop tool:
    • allows you to adjust the edges of an area to be cropped by dragging them with the mouse;
    • darkens the area outside of the selection, so you can see how cropping will affect the composition of the picture;
    • you can optionally constrain the aspect ratio of the selected area (16:9, 4:3, 5:7 etc).
  • Added customizable menu with preset image sizes in the Resize tool.
  • Added new zoom levels with a factor of 1.41 (square root of 2).
  • Added the option of auto zoom. When you load an image it is automatically scaled to fit the window size. You can choose to fit the width, height, or both.
  • You can bind the selected auto-fitting zoom mode to middle button click (mouse wheel click).
  • Now the default setting for new installations is to use bicubic interpolation when displaying scaled-down images (zoom out). In order to improve display speed of the viewer some functions have been rewritten using the SSE2 instruction set.
  • The Text tool now lets you drag the text with your mouse.
  • Fixed rare AV bug when rendering text outside image borders.
  • A number of small changes in the Full Screen view to make it more consistent with windowed mode (shortcut keys, synchronized zoom and scroll position).
Version 2.4.6.263 (July 26, 2010)
  • The text tool has been completely rewritten:
    • Added support for multi-line text
    • Improved text rendering quality with better anti-aliasing
    • Implemented a variety of blending modes: multiply, screen, burn, dodge, etc.
    • Ability to render text with a smooth outline
    • Compatibility with Windows Vista and Windows 7
Version 2.4.5.222 (April 20, 2010)

    • Added partial support for loading HDR image formats and RAW camera formats (currently all HDR and RAW images are automatically converted to an 8-bit per channel representation).
    • Improved support for importing PSD files.
    • Several fixes for PNG, TIFF, TARGA and other formats.
Version 2.4.4.197 (March 28, 2010)
  • Fixed possible numeric overflow when resizing very large images.
  • Fixed a rare memory leak in PNG compressor.
  • Transparency tool: added an option to replace invisible background with a solid color.
  • Minor stability fixes.
Version 2.4.3.161 (February 28, 2008)

Version 2.4.2.124 (December 4, 2007)
  • Added rotation by an arbitrary angle.
  • Improved gradual blending effect in Add Border command.
  • Updated documentation.
  • Some minor GUI fixes.
Version 2.4.1.37 (August 21, 2007)
  • Added "Display interpolation" option to the Preferences dialog. You can choose between speed and quality of the viewer. The fastest method "Nearest neighbor" is set by default for consistency with older versions.
  • Added "Convert to sRGB..." command for color profile conversion. Available only if an embedded profile is present in the image.
  • Improved viewer performance and greatly reduced memory usage as compared to version 2.4.0
  • The Resample command has been renamed to "Resize".
  • Windows 98/Me compatibility fix.
  • Various minor bug fixes.
Version 2.4.0.36 Beta (July 11, 2007)- interim test release.
  • Added basic support for ICC color profiles. Images with embedded profiles are now color-corrected on-the-fly when displayed in JPEG Imager. The display profile (if available for your monitor) is ignored by default. You can enable it in the "Color Management" dialog box that now can be found on the View menu.
  • Internal: Added support for hyper-threading and multi-core processors. Some of per-pixel image operations can be transparently distributed between logical processor "cores" available in the system.
  • Major performance improvements for all operations utilizing image filtering (convolution): Gaussian Blur, Resample etc.
  • Added initial support for importing various bitmapped image file formats: including TIFF, PSD, TGA, DDS, MNG, etc.
  • Now, semi-transparent images are always shown alpha-blended with a chessboard pattern used as a background. When you work with the Transparency tool you can choose to view the image over a checkered or solid color background.
  • Improved zoom: scaled down images are filtered to reduce aliasing artifacts (such as jagging, moire and the like).
  • Fixed a bug with the "Levels" tool that caused alpha-channel corruption.
  • Fixed a shameful bug in the "Text Overlay" tool, where the font selection button was not working.

  • Fixed a bug that caused an AV error message when you cancel a running image operation with "Soft Edge" option enabled (in Selective Edit mode).
  • Improved stability when loading damaged or incomplete files.
Version 2.3.0.32 (October 13, 2005)
Because of major internal changes, this version should be considered BETA. Use it at your own risk.

  • Added "Freehand Select" (aka Lasso) tool.
  • Added drag-scroll with right mouse button while using selection tools.
  • New selection tool modifier: Ctrl+Shift - enables intersection mode.
